Hiking & Nature in the Kinzig Valley
Fischerbach is known as the "sun terrace of the Kinzig Valley" thanks to its sunny hillside location. Our holiday apartment sits directly on the Kinzigtalsteig, the new long-distance hiking trail through the Kinzig Valley that will connect the region's most beautiful spots over roughly 150 km and ten stages starting October 2026 – Fischerbach is one of the stage towns on the route between Wolfach and Haslach. Perfect for guests who want to hike individual stages and stay with us along the way.
One of the most popular routes right from Fischerbach is the loop to the Nilleck viewpoint and on to the Brandenkopf lookout tower, a roughly 19 km route with about 6 hours of walking time. At 945 metres, the Brandenkopf is the region's most prominent summit and offers sweeping panoramic views from the top.
The Panoramaweg also runs right through the village, offering many views over Fischerbach, Haslach, and the entire Kinzig Valley – a roughly 14 km loop that also works well as a relaxed day trip. For something shorter: the "Teufelskanzel" trail leads to a striking rock formation with a lovely view, and "Rund um das Vordertal" is an easy, roughly two-hour loop with wonderful views starting right from Fischerbach's Vordertal.
Cyclists and mountain bikers are well catered for around Fischerbach too: thanks to the gentle valley landscape and the Kinzigtal cycle path, the region has long been popular with cyclists, from family-friendly routes along the Kinzig river to challenging mountain bike trails around the Brandenkopf. E-bike and touring routes round out the offer for those who prefer things a little more relaxed. Fischerbach is also part of the Gastliches Kinzigtal Nordic Walking Arena, with routes for every skill level.
Excursions in the Region
Vogtsbauernhof Open-Air Museum (Gutach, approx. 15 minutes by car)
Baden-Württemberg's oldest open-air museum displays more than 20 historic Black Forest farmhouses on a picturesque hillside site, moved here from across the region – including the namesake Vogtsbauernhof from 1612. Visitors can watch craft demonstrations such as broom-making or a working sawmill, and see old livestock breeds. Especially appealing for families: a large adventure playground with a water play area and a forest maze. The museum is open from late March to early November.
Triberg Waterfalls (approx. 30 minutes by car)
At around 163 metres in total height, these are among the highest waterfalls in Germany outside the Alps. The Gutach river cascades down a wooded hillside over seven stages – an impressive natural spectacle that's accessible year-round and even lit up in the evening. Various trails lead to different vantage points, including a wider, family-friendly path.
Gutach Summer Toboggan Run (approx. 15 minutes by car)
Over roughly 1,000 metres, you race downhill by bobsled through curves, loops, and jumps, reaching speeds of up to 40 km/h that you control yourself with a brake lever. At the bottom, a beer garden and playground await – a favourite outing for families with children.
Waldkirch Treetop Walk (approx. 40 minutes by car)
The walkway leads up to 23 metres above the ground through the Black Forest treetops, offering views as far as the Elz and Upper Rhine valleys. It's complemented by a sensory trail, a barefoot path, and an adventure trail – an entertaining outing for the whole family.
Kinzigtalbad Ortenau
This year-round pool, jointly run by Fischerbach, Hausach, Haslach, and other towns, offers a 25-metre outdoor sports pool, a non-swimmer area, and a splash pad for toddlers. The indoor pool also has a 34°C therapy and relaxation pool plus a toddler area with a slide.
Europa-Park Rust (approx. 45 minutes by car)
Germany's largest theme park, with over 100 attractions, roller coasters, and shows – a classic choice for an action-packed day out.
Schwarzwaldbahn (Black Forest Railway)
This famous railway line through the Black Forest, with its many tunnels and viaducts, is a sight in itself and connects towns including Gutach, Hausach, and Triberg – a handy way to reach several of these destinations without a car.
Practical tip: many of these destinations are easy to reach by public transport – free of charge with the KONUS guest card.
Eating & Drinking Nearby
Just about a 5-minute walk from the apartment is the Hotel & Gasthaus Fuxxbau, our direct neighbour in the Vordertal. The restaurant serves regional and German cuisine made with fresh, local ingredients, plus a cosy terrace overlooking the Fischerbach valley. Breakfast is also available there on request – handy if you'd like to start your holiday day relaxed, without self-catering.
Other great spots in Fischerbach: the Gasthaus zum Engel has been awarded the "Schönes Gasthaus der Ortenau" prize and serves regional cuisine in its "Stube" restaurant, with seasonal specialities such as fresh trout, asparagus, chanterelles, and duck, plus spirits from its own distillery – including a garden terrace with views of the Kinzig Valley and barbecue evenings every Thursday. For hearty Black Forest farmhouse snacks, the Vesperstube Vollmer is the place to go.
Along the Kinzigtal cycle path and in the neighbouring towns of Haslach, Hausach, and Hofstetten, you'll also find numerous restaurants, cafés, and beer gardens for a break during hikes or bike rides.
